IoT, Analytics and Data: A day with Intel Edison,GE and OpenWeb

Just a few days back on 25th October, I received an invitation to attend a Internet of Things workshop by Intel and GE Digital showcasing what edison and the predix platform could do. And I realized that’s pretty good chance to see what javascript and openweb can work and do in Tandem with it. So on a early morning of 25th October I hopped on to an Uber to go to “Work Lodge”. A nice little co working place in the middle of Houston and discovered When that was over we started setting up for the workshop. The most interesting thing I noticed from the organizers were how they were planning to distribute the wifi among all the 60 participants. Pretty clever I must say. good way to distribute wifi load in a workshop, specially in one where everyone will probably connect atleast 4-5 devices to wifi (including the IoT board). Then we satrted builidng our prototype and projects. Mostly what was used was Intel Edision boards along with a combination of sensors. I had used a combination of tempe...

Setting up Firebase manually using SDK

1. Get your Firebase copy Head over to the  iOS Getting Started page , scroll to the bottom and click on the "framework SDK zip" link to download an archive containing all the Firebase frameworks. Please leave a comment if the link is not valid anymore, and I'll make sure to update the guide with the new location. I've said frameworks, using the plural, because as you'll see once you'll extract the archive, the SDK comes in a number of focused frameworks. In fact, Firebase offer a number of services, analytics, "realtime" database, notifications, etc... and the team has done a great job into providing a framework for each service, so that developers can mix and match without having to carry extra code they don't need with them. You'll also notice that the archive comes with a README. The file contains barebone instructions to setup the SDK manually, this post augments them. 2. Copy Firebase/Analytics into your project The analyt...

BrazilJS : And a wall of dreams

Today I want to talk a little bit about BrazilJS. The memories are still fresh since it happened just a month back for an action packed 2 days at the beautiful city of Porto Alegre.  Apart from having some of the most awesome speakers I have heard in a conference it had one of the most active and engaged audiences I have seen. Mozilla had a remarkable presence there, including the captivating talk of Mike Taylor about " How to make browsers compatible with the Web ” which I highly recommend you to listen to if you are a web developer or aspire to be one. You will not only benefit yourself from it, but will do a favour to everyone who tries to follow web standards. He gave the same talk in Viewsource just a few weeks after BrazilJS. Apart from the talk we had a WebVR and a HTML Game booth set up at the venue, which kind of looked like this when we were setting it up The WebVR booth at BrazilJS The item up for demo was “Puzzle Rain”. A WebVR game specially...

OpenSource Bridge 2016: Back among the Open Source Citizens

I recently gave a talk  in OpenSource Bridge in Portland. This was my second time taking a session here, the first one being on Firefox OS ( sigh ) last year. My session was on 23rd June, the penultimate day of the conference and the same day when I finally reached portland at 12:50 AM. Since the talk was at 10:45 AM. I spend the rest of the night quickly juggling up my slides and last minute code pushes in github. Last minute talks are nothing new to me, being the star procrastrinator among all the Mozilla TechSpeakers. But this time I was a little nervous and wanted the talk to go smooth since this had generated a little bit of attention due to an awesome article from Benjamin (which you can read here ). And the tweets followed Bringing #Mozilla to the IoT er > the glee, when your merged #firefox code will affect millions of people @rabimba https://t.co/5oAaEEgfxo — Jeff Mackanic (@mackanic) June 13, 2016 . @mozilla needs to stay relevan...

All Hands 2016: MozLondon, A recount

#MozLondon : Mozilla All Hands 2016 I recently had the opportunity to take part in Mozilla All Hands 2016 (a.k.a #MozLondon). Mozilla All hands. All Hands are bi-yearly events of Mozilla where all the paid staff from different teams around the globe meet with each other along with a handful of invited volunteers to disscuss about future projects and get some work done! This year it was in London and just immediately before Brexit (I actually didn't even know about it before I went there). It was a work week, so essentially the event spanned from Monday to Friday. I arrived at LHR on Monday morning, and then there was the awesome Heathrow Express which took me to Paddington, just a 7 mins walk away from Hilton Metropole where I was staying with a bunch of other people. The event started with all of us having an evening orientation familiarizing us with rules and regulations along with Code of Conduct(that turned out to be really important later on...).  Tuesday started w...

OpenIoT Summit: Two days with IoT, old phones and WebVR

OpenIoT Summit 2016 Report I recently had the pleasure to present at the OpenIoT Summit 2016 by Linux Foundation where I was representing Mozilla as a Mozilla TechSpeaker. The event was quite nice and had a lot of tracks. A little description from their website Introducing the new OpenIoT Summit… Billions of devices, trillions of dollars of opportunity. Building on successive waves of Web, mobile, and cloud, and powered by a revolution of cheap powerful hardware that is ever connected, the promise of the Internet of Things has finally arrived. It’s here, it’s real and it is creating untold opportunity. .. .. Unlike existing IoT events, IoT Summit if for technologists and by technologists. Experts from the world’s leading companies and most important open source projects will present the information you need to lead and succeed successful IoT developments so that you can bring smart connected products and solutions to market. OpenIoT Summit is the only Io...

A day in SpaceCityJS and Houston Hackathon

Recently I had the opportunity to visit SpaceCity JS in Houston. Spacecity JS is a conference in Houston focused on JavaScript and the web platform, organized by the folks from other Houston based developer gorups like houston.js, Node JS Houston, and other groups. It was a little different from the conferences I generally attend. A bit more open but still being very developer oriented. A small time line on how things happened. Event Date : 14th May,2016 Place : Houston, TMCx TimeStream: The day started with registration and breakfast at the TMC Innovation Center in houston. We all started with cups of coffee and breakfast. Then Evan Morikawa from Nylas N1 team took the stage and talked about how they used electron and react to build N1. Also he emphasized a lot on how chrome devtools helped in the process with performance profiling and getting the buttery smooth experience we get from N1(https://twitter.com/E0M/status/731494334734979072). Evan Morikawa on how they ...
